Sea Otter Classic - 2 Races, 1 Day

Rolling into the Sea Otter Classic feels less like showing up to a race and more like stepping into a full-blown cycling universe humming with energy, dust, and anticipation. Friday morning, April 17th, the 9:30am start of the 30-mile gravel race hits like a cannon. Heart rates spike as riders spill out from Laguna Seca and into a course that’s deceptively brutal, packing roughly 3,500 feet of climbing into a single lap of rolling fire roads, loose corners, and punchy ascents that never quite let you settle in. I did the 30 mile loop, so I was one of the lucky ones that didn’t need to continue onto lap 2 or 3. The terrain constantly shifts under you, forcing focus, grit, and just enough restraint to not burn every match too early. It’s a race that feels longer than its mileage, where legs start bargaining halfway through and the final climbs back toward the raceway feel like riding through resistance itself. But the beauty is in the chaos, the dust trails, helicopters overhead, spectators scattered across the hills. It was pure gravel theater. The last few miles you are greeted by one of the nastiest hill clips in all of California. Loose gravel and 22% made for an interesting “Hike a Bike.

Then, just when your body starts to process what it went through, the clock resets. By 4:30pm, I was back on course for the 18-mile eMTB race, a completely different beast. It was tighter, more technical, built around multiple laps with steep climbs and punchy descents that demand precision as much as power . The fatigue from the morning lingers in your legs like a ghost, but the assisted surge of the e-bike adds a new rhythm. It was less about survival, more about flow and control. Racing both in one day turns the experience into something bigger than competition. It becomes a test of adaptability, endurance, and mental toughness, all wrapped inside one of the most electric cycling festivals in the world. Each Lap had a daunting 900 feet of elevation. Even the most powerful of E-Bikes whined taking on that elevation.
